Business Operations NSF

NSF promotes two employees. Samuel Cole has been promoted to director of product certification – equipment and chemical evaluation, Global Food Division. Sonia Acuña-Rubio has been promoted to director of food product certification, Global Food Division.

In his new role, Cole leads NSF’s non-food certification and evaluation teams. His teams prevent food-borne illness by certifying and registering commercial and processing food service equipment, food contact materials, and non-food compounds, including lubricants, greases and other chemicals used in and around food processing areas. NSF also serves as a third-party profiler for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Safer Choice program. Cole joined NSF’s product certification team in 2015. He holds a bachelor of science degree from Michigan State University.

In her new role, Acuña-Rubio ensures NSF’s certifications provide independent verification for food label and packaging claims in all regions. Acuña-Rubio also oversees Quality Assurance International (QAI), an NSF company and an organic certification provider in global markets. Acuña-Rubio started her career as a food safety auditor. She joined NSF as senior managing director of Latin America in 2007. Acuña-Rubio holds a bachelor of science in agronomic engineering and a bachelor of science in technical engineering, both in the food industry, from the University of Santiago de Compostela. She has a master’s degree in biosystems engineering from the University of California, Davis, and an MBA from California State University, Sacramento.
